The Long Way Home is a stand-alone historical novel set in the 1980s.
The Long Way Home is the story of Larry Edwards. A working-class man with a high school education, Larry has two big problems—that he knows of.
One problem is his nephew, Anthony, whom Larry must raise after Anthony loses his parents. This is difficult for Larry because of his second problem. He isn’t married, never has been married, and has no idea how to raise children.
At the same time, Larry must deal with his increasingly obsolete job skills in a deindustrializing Rust Belt town in 1980s Michigan. Increasing drug and alcohol abuse, unemployment, and depression lurk over Larry’s life, ready to pounce.
Just when Larry’s given up all hope of a regular family life, however, he meets Anna Nicholson, a ray of light piercing the darkness of his personal life. Anna has some skeletons of her own, however, and when mixed with Larry’s, the combination threatens to wreck their relationship before it can save them both.
The Long Way Home is the story of two regular people hoping to triumph over their inner demons and find unexpected happiness together.
