Yes, Every Breath by Nicholas Sparks makes two of his books in a row. What can I say? Romance books sell better than nearly anything else. I’d like to learn how to write them better.
Unlike The Return, Every Breath is at least a little bit historic. Most of the story occurs in 1990, with the closing chapters taking place later. It also references a historic event of some significance—the ending of white rule in Zimbabwe and the fate of the white farmers who had wielded immense political influence in that nation for decades.
Plot of Every Breath by Nicholas Sparks
One of the two main characters, Tru Walls, is a member of one such influential family. Except he doesn’t want a life of wealth and ease. Instead, he’s a safari guide who plays guitar and creates sketch art. The hook that brings him into the story is that his father was an American who never knew he’d fathered Tru until the end of his life when he’s nearly dead. Still, Tru goes to North Carolina to meet his father.
While there he meets Hope. She’s at her family’s beach cottage next door to where Tru is set to meet his father. Hope faces a classic dilemma. She’s got a boyfriend, but he’s not a very good boyfriend, but she sorta loves him. You know how it goes sometimes.
Needless to say, she falls for Tru and they recognize they are the perfect match. But things aren’t that easy. Tru lives in Zimbabwe, for one. He’s divorced with a son, for two. And then there’s Josh, the boyfriend. Plus some other things I won’t give away.

Reaction to Every Breath by Nicholas Sparks
Compared to the previous book I read by Sparks, The Return, I found this a much better story. Both of the main characters are very sympathetic. The reader knows that somehow they’ll be together in the end. But that doesn’t come the way one expects it too. Yet the ending makes you like the characters even more than you already did. It’s not a likely ending, for sure, but this is fiction. The ending isn’t supposed to be mundane.
Sparks throws in a few other nice touches, too, like the Kindred Spirit mailbox. Likewise with Hope’s family cottage on the North Carolina beach. Many of us can relate to that special place that produces happy childhood memories like the cottage did for Hope.

Who Might Like the Book
Anyone who enjoys romance stories with a heat level of moderate and below will probably like the book. I’m not a big romance reader personally, but even I found Every Breath by Nicholas Sparks a very strong story. If you like stories about complex relationships with some tragedy and hard choices thrown in, you’ll also take to this story. It’s not hard to understand how the book has 13,000+ reviews at present and five out of six reviewers gave the book five stars.
